Prior to joining MIAD, Richard served as the Director of the Office of Intercultural Student Engagement at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. In his career, Richard has implemented: gender-inclusive housing; all-gender restrooms; prayer/meditation rooms; a bias incident reporting form; Halal meals in dining halls; and a Cultural Council for students.

He has served as the primary contact and coordinator of student support services for students of color, queer and transgender students, and students from diverse faith backgrounds. He coordinated accreditation compliance; created a Safe Space program and served as lead facilitator for over 500 people; managed all aspects of a co-curricular diversity leadership certificate, including trainings, service opportunities, and assessment; and coordinated a Diversity Lecture Series, working in collaboration with faculty, staff, and off-campus community partners.
