Join Assistant Professor Sarah Eichhorn and Assistant Director of Emerging Technology Kayle Karbowski on Wednesday, Oct. 28 at 11:15 for an introduction to the “Living Studio” Travel/Study Program this June.
This 2-week program provides students with an opportunity to immerse themselves in studio practice that is slow, intentional, and community-minded. Participants will be introduced to the geological and cultural history of the Wisconsin Driftless region and its impact on creative and sustainable practice in the region, while having opportunities to work hands-on harvesting and making with locally sourced materials. An immersion in activities around relationality, place, and sustainability serves as a focal point for the experience.
The first three days of the program will take place in Milwaukee where students will be introduced to concepts of relational making and collective practice, and will visit local sites and artists whose work reflects the ethos. Then faculty and students will travel by 15-passenger van to Viroqua, Wisconsin where Thoreau College and The Driftless Folk School will serve as the program’s home base for 10 days.
While on-site, participants will interact with craftspeople, artists, and activists whose creative work connects and relies on the land, labor, and ecology of the Driftless region.
